BEYONCE SHEDS SOME LIGHT ON BLUE IVY CARTER'S NAME
Celebrities have a tendency to pick the wackiest monikers possible for their offspring, but when Beyoncé and Jay-Z announced they'd named their first child Blue Ivy Carter in January 2012, many fans were still surprised by the unusual choice.
Now proud mom Beyoncé has dropped what some interpret as a hint about why they chose that particular name, posting a passage from Rebecca Solnit's Field Guide to Getting Lost on her official Tumblr. The passage reads:
The world is blue at its edges and in its depths. This blue is the light that got lost. Light at the blue end of the spectrum does not travel the whole distance from the sun to us. It disperses among the molecules of the air, it scatters in the water. Water is colorless, shallow water appears to be the color of whatever lies underneath it, but deep water is full of this scattered light, the purer the water the deeper the blue. The sky is blue for the same reason, but blue at the horizon, the blue of the land that seems to be dissolving into the sky, is a deeper, dreamier, melancholy blue, the blue at the farthest reaches of the places where you see for miles, the blue of distance. This light does not touch us, does not travel the whole distance the light that gets lost, gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is in the color blue.
Paraphrased: Blue is deep, pure, dreamy, and beautiful. Much of the world's beauty is in blue. Thus, Beyoncé's named her kid after that which gives the world beauty. How sweet.
Perhaps more fascinating: Despite nonstop recording and touring, Ms. Knowles somehow finds the time to lose herself in meditative essays about nature. She's a heck of a lady.
