An Abuja Federal High Court on Thursday fixed July 17 for hearing in a plagiarism suit brought against Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, by a United States-based lecturer.
The plaintiff, Prof. Victor Dike of the School of Engineering and Technology, National University of Sacramento, California, had alleged that Sanusi breached his intellectual property rights without proper reference and citation in accordance with Copyright Acts in two separate convocation lectures he (Sanusi) presented.
The court, presided by Justice Adamu Bello, had, after hearing an exparte motion by the plaintiff on April 23, granted an order for substituted service of the process on the CBN governor, and adjourned the matter till May 31 for mention.
Sanusi was not present in the court when the matter came up for mention on Thursday, but when the case was announced, an unidentified man stood up to announce that he was in the court on behalf of the CBN governor.
But the judge frowned on the development, saying “He (Sanusi) is sued in his personal capacity, I don’t see how you can represent him.”
Thereafter, Sanusi’s counsel, Mr. Austin Irabor, moved the defendant’s preliminary objections to the plaintiff’s suit.the plaintiff’s suit.
However, the plaintiff counsel, Mr. Esan Itua, opposed Irabor’s appearance in the matter on the grounds that the defence counsel did not file a memorandum of appearance in line with the rules of the court.
