Eagles will take one game at a time, says Keshi

Nigeria’sSuper Eagles on Thursday evening arrived Nelspruit, South Africa venue of its two opening games in this year’s Africa Nations Cup championship.

The team had on Wednesday afternoon left its Faro, Portugal training camp by road to Lisbon from where the 23 players and officials led by Head Coach Stephen Keshi were joined by Head Of Delegation and Enyimba of Aba Chairman, Felix Anyasi Agwu. It was from there that the team caught an Air France plane to Paris, France.

From Paris, the team took another Air France Air Bus jetliner to Johannesburg, South Africa. The flight lasted 10 hours, 20minutes. On arrival in Johannesburg, the team was met by Nigerian Embassy officials and hordes of supporters who drummed away with popular Nigerian songs.

Addressing the media on arrival, Anyansi Agwu, who spoke first in Johannesburg, said the team was there to return Nigerian football to its glory days despite the relatively youthful side that Nigeria will parade at the tournament. Keshi on his part said the team will take each game as it comes, declaring that he was not under any pressure to deliver the trophy to Nigerians.

Africa’s football-governing body, CAF has given all 16 teams playing in the final tournament of  the cup of nations until midnight of January 9 2013 to submit their final list of 23 players for the event.

Already, the NFF has finalised arrangements for international friendlies with Catalonia and Cape Verde, with the first taking place on January 2 while the clash with surprise Cup of Nations finalists Cape Verde will come up on January 9 – the same day Keshi will announce his final list.

Following Friday’s meeting, chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Barrister Chris Green explained that 14 local players will travel to Portugal to be joined by 10 Europe-based professionals for the match with Catalonia on January 2, with the remaining eight foreign-based stars linking up with the squad on January 4.

Croatia is not famed for being a bastion of feminism but a fifth division football club has made a bold move by appointing former model Tihana Nemcic as their new manager.
The 24-year-old former player – and a finalist of Croatia Miss Sport – has taken over the reins at fifth division side NK Viktorija Vojakovac. ‘If a woman and a man have the same professional qualifications for a coaching job, I see no reason why I should not get into male football,’ she told 24 Sata.
She said her players ‘listen to me and make no problems,’ adding: ‘I am the head coach and I have full liberty to create and plan the team’s tactics.’ Nemcic, who played for Dinamo Zagreb’s women’s team and the Croatia national side, was among 15 finalists for Croatia’s Miss Sport in 2008.

Joseph Yobo Signs N1.6B Deal with Turkish Team

Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo has finally sealed a deal of 3 years with the Number 1 team in the Turkish League- Fenerbahce Fc of Turkey.

The deal would cost the Turkish team $10Million which is about N1.6 Billion in Nigerian currency. He will also be entitled to another $1m bonus yearly.

Nigerian basketball team win first Olympic game

The Nigerian basketball team this morning won their first game at the 2012 London Olympics,  Al-Farouq Aminu had 15 points to help Nigeria hold off a second-half rally by Tunisia in the first game of the men's Olympic basketball tournament Sunday with a 60-56 victory.

Nigeria held Tunisia to 15 points in the first half and held a 16-point halftime lead. They led by as many as 19 and seemed in control of the game.

Tunisia, however, began the second half with a 10-2 run and closed the gap to two points late in the game.

But Aminu, who plays for the NBA's New Orleans Hornets, made of one of two free throws to seal the victory with 11 seconds remaining.

Amine Rzig scored 15 of his 18 points in the second-half to lead Tunisia in the Group A game.

It was the Olympic debut for both teams in men's basketball.

They beat Tunisia 60-56 and need just one more win to get through to the next round. Go team Nigeria!
